Rabindranath Tagore was a renowned Indian poet, writer, philosopher, and polymath who was born on 7th May 1861 in Kolkata, India. He was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, a philosopher and religious reformer. 

Rabindranath Tagore is widely regarded as one of the greatest poets in the history of Indian literature and his contributions to Indian literature and art are immense.

Tagore was educated at home and later attended the University of Calcutta. He started writing at a young age and his first book of poems, 'Kabi-Kahini', was published when he was just sixteen years old. 

His literary works include poems, songs, short stories, novels, essays, and plays. His most famous works include 'Gitanjali', 'The Home and the World', 'The Post Office', and 'Sadhana'.

Tagore was not just a writer and poet, but also a philosopher and educator. He established a school called Santiniketan in West Bengal, which later grew into a university known as Visva-Bharati. 

The school was based on his philosophy of education, which emphasized the importance of learning in nature and the integration of the arts into education.

Tagore was a staunch supporter of Indian nationalism and the Indian freedom struggle. He was the first Indian to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 for his collection of poems, 'Gitanjali'. Tagore used his literary works to inspire and motivate people towards social and political change.

Tagore was not just a literary figure, but also a cultural icon. He was a talented artist and musician, and his contributions to Indian classical music are significant. His works continue to inspire and influence people across the world, and his poetry is widely translated into several languages.
