The origin of Bharatanatyam traces back to the Natyashastra, an ancient book written by Bharata Muni. During ancient times Bharatanatyam is a temple dance.
It was a dance usually performed by Devadasis and Nattuvanars. In modern days some of the dancers like Rukmini Devi founded a school of dances (Kalakshetra) and promoted Bharatanatyam.
