Major Shaitan Singh (1 December 1924 – 18 November 1962) was an Indian Army officer and a recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military honour. Singh was born in Rajasthan.
During the Indo-China war of 1962. The 13th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment was stationed in the Chushul sector. C Company, under the command of Singh. He was holding a position in Rezang La.
On the morning of 18 November 1962, the Chinese attacked. After several unsuccessful attacks from the front, the Chinese attacked from behind. The Indians fought until their last round before they were eventually overpowered by the Chinese. Singh was awarded the Param Vir Chakra on 18 November 1962 for his actions.
Early life
Shaitan Singh was born on 1 December 1924 in Bangsar village of Jodhpur district of Rajasthan. His father was Lieutenant Colonel Hem Singh. During World War I, Lieutenant Colonel Singh served in France with the Indian Army.
Singh studied at Rajput High School in Jodhpur till matriculation. In school. He was known for his skills as a football player. After completing his schooling in 1943, Singh went to Jaswant College. And completed his graduation in 1947. On 1 August 1949, he joined the Jodhpur State Army as an officer.
Sino-Indian War
After the merger of the princely state of Jodhpur with India. Singh was transferred to the Kumaon Regiment. He participated in operations in the Naga Hills and also participated in the Indian annexation of Goa in 1961. On 11 June 1962, he was promoted to the rank of Major.
India and China had long-standing disagreements over the boundaries in the Himalayan region. To counter the increasing Chinese incursions into the disputed area. Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, sought strategies to deal with them.
Battle of Rezangala
During the war. The 13th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment was stationed in the Chusul sector. At an altitude of 5.000 m (16.000 ft) above sea level. The Sea Company, under Singh's command, had a post at Rezang La and the area was defended by five platoon outposts.
On the morning of 18 November 1962, the Chinese attacked. 5:00 am. The platoon got a better view of the Chinese. They started firing with light machine guns. Rifles slurry and grenades. Killed many Chinese soldiers.
Battle of Rezangala
At 5:40 am artillery and mortars were fired at the Indians. Again, about three and a half hundred Chinese soldiers began to advance through the creek.
Indians fired 3-inch (76 mm) mortar shells and killed several Chinese soldiers. Charged towards the post as the last twenty survivors. The Indians jumped out of their trenches and engaged in one-on-one combat with the Chinese soldiers.
However. The platoon was soon besieged with the arrival of Chinese troops. Ultimately. No survivors were left with the number 7 and 8 platoons.
During the war. Singh continued to move from position to position, reorganizing strongholds and boosting the morale of his men. As he moved between posts without any cover. He was seriously injured.
The Indian side suffered 114 casualties out of 123 in the war. After the war. Singh's body was found on the same rock. It was brought to Jodhpur and cremated with military honours.
Param Vir Chakra
For his actions in the Battle of Rejang La on 18 November 1962, Singh was awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
In the 1980s. Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). A Government of India Enterprise under the aegis of Ministry of Shipping. PVC named fifteen of its crude oil tankers in honour of recipients. Tanker MT Major Shaitan Singh. PVC was delivered to SCI in 1985. and served for 25 years before being phased out.
