Essay on Veer Gatha Project

Veer Gatha is a memoir of war heroes, who will be remembered forever for their indomitable courage, devotion to duty and undying love for the motherland.

The award is the highest military decoration and is for supreme gallantry, supreme courage, leadership, exemplary devotion to duty and self-sacrifice in wartime.

War as we know it is the biggest man-made disaster affecting mankind. But the bigger question is, can we survive the war? Perhaps there is no definite answer to this question, but if wars do not convey the message of peace then we certainly should not glorify wars.

A true tribute to our war heroes, some of whom laid down their lives for a noble cause, must ensure that peace and harmony prevail. Reading these stories will give you the opportunity to connect with history and take a stand for what must be happening in the present – war or peace forever!

The stories ahead are inspiring and instructive. They will enlighten the reader about our "Param Veterans", the Bravehearts, their disciplined and determined characters and their commitment to responsibility.

We are sure that you will be inspired to imbibe his quintessential qualities and carry forward the glorious tradition established by him. Let us remind ourselves that the time has come for us to amicably resolve our conflicts and rise as members of one human family.

The Constitution of India states that the State shall endeavour to promote international peace and security, maintain just and honourable relations between nations, to promote respect for international law, and to encourage the settlement of international disputes by arbitration.

However, circumstances required independent India to engage in wars and conflicts with China in 1947–48, 1965, 1971, 1987, 1999 and 1962. The armed forces were also called upon to serve in peacekeeping missions in nations such as DR. Congo (1960–64) and Sri Lanka (1987–90).

The personnel of all the services made immense sacrifices to achieve the goals of national security and honour at home and abroad.

This useful book contains inspiring stories of 21 Bravehearts who were awarded the Param Vir Chakra (PVC), India's highest wartime gallantry medal, for their service to the nation. Since 1947, only 21 war heroes were awarded the PVC.

Of them, 14 were posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra and 16 participated in India's wars and conflicts with Pakistan alone. PVC awardees come from a wide range of socio-economic and educational backgrounds.

While some come from defence families, most are from other walks of life. Half of these are officers, while half are from JCOs/NCOs/Jawans. These heroes can belong to different communities, regions, services, regiments, units, ranks, age groups and different periods of India's post-independence history.

But they all have in common the spirit of patriotism and the highest level of gallantry displayed on the battlefield. Symbolizing ethos and values such as devotion to duty, esprit de corps, honesty, respect, non-discrimination, and a spirit of selfless sacrifice, they lived up to the motto: "One for all and one for all". This is reflected in every story.

The safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time.

The honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next.

Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time.
