Cinema, both entertains and educates the masses, for it mirrors our social values.
Cinema today has come a long way from the early days of silent pictures. The true-to-life sets, dramatic screenplays, photographic techniques, acting histrionics, and their portrayal on a 70-millimeter screen, with electronic sound effects, in plush multiplexes, have made theater a perfect medium for entertainment and education.
Because of its close proximity to the people, it mirrors their societal values and ethos. It shows us the true picture of life. The evils of society, are vividly portrayed on screen, which makes it a powerful medium for social change.
• Offers an affordable way of entertainment catering to various tastes, interests,s, and moods.
There is no denying the truth, that cinema offers an easy, and affordable means of entertainment to the masses. After a day of hard work, they are able to escape from the tension and worries of life. To others, it is an escape from boredom.
The true-to-life portrayal of characters, provokes our emotions, moving us to tears, laughter, thrill, or even shock. They thus cater to a selection of our tastes, interest, and moods.
• Powerful tool for education via an abysmal medium. Pictures like Gandhi, Saheed Bhagat Singh, and Mugla-e-Azam promote brotherhood, communal harmony, and national-ism.
It is also a very powerful tool for education. The audio-visual mode of demonstration leaves an indelible on our memory and makes learning a pleasant experience.
This is for we get to see and hear about different people, places, and habits leading to a deeper understanding and assimilation of ideas and knowledge.
It gives life-like reality to the lifeless pages of the background, by bringing to life the heroes of the past. Thus pictures like Gandhi, Saheed Bhagat Singh, and Mugla-e-Azam give invaluable insight into these terrific people, their struggle, aspirations, and ideology.
Such pictures promote brotherhood, communal harmony and nationalism, by reminding us of our rich cultural heritage.
• Excellent medium of propaganda employed by the authorities to promote social stability and health care.
Cinema is a very powerful tool for social change since it efficiently reflects the evil prevailing in society. The powerful portrayal of social malpractices such as unsociability, sati pratha, dowry, child labor, and corruption pricks our conscience.
• Unscrupulous persons exploit it for personal gains, showing scenes of violence and sex, that tainted youth, and society.
It is also an exceptional medium of propaganda. The advertisements and endorsements help in boosting the selling of products and services. The government also uses it, to promote social harmony and health care.
Thus documentaries creating awareness for the prevention of Aids, Polio, and other information to benefit society, are effectively dissipated through this medium.
The fashion industry owes its genesis and growth, to the cinema. It sets the fashion trends for the youth, who imitate the hairstyles and dresses of popular film stars.
Conclusion:
As conclusive proof, the government has a Film Division for the production and distribution of pictures, to the general public.
The prevalence of this media has led to some unscrupulous mandarins of cinema, exploiting it for personal gains. Thus unwarranted scenes of violence and sex, are displayed, to draw the audience which brings them the moolah.
They contend that these are essential for a movie to be realistic and viable. This truly is an extremely frivolous and reckless argument, for such acts corrupt the youth, and society.
They resort to such tactics, to cover up the weak storyline, lack of imagination, and leadership.
This has been amply proved, by the resounding success of this fantastic film, that does not resort to such cheap gimmickry. The censor board plays an important role in censoring films that is in bad taste. Recognizing the significant role of Cinema in education and entertainment.
The government has set up a separate unit, the Film Division, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The Films Division helps in the creation and distribution of good pictures, to the general public. This itself is ample proof of the substantial role played by cinema in entertainment and education.
