I have never visited any hill station before. Some of my friends were planning to visit Murree hills. They also invited me to accompany them. I was wild with joy when my parents okayed our program.
After making all the necessary preparations, we took a train from Karachi to reach Rawalpindi.
After a day's halt there, we left for Murree by bus. The journey up the hills was very enjoyable. The ascent was full of turns and windings, and altogether, the journey was quite different from that in the plains.
We reached Murree at about 3 p.m. on the same day. It was a fine cool and pleasing day. Life here is costly.
Hotels are impossible for the common man. But we were lucky enough to get in a dak bungalow on moderate charges.
We were quite tired so we settled ourselves comfortably. On the following morning, we came out to have a view of the hills.
The scenery was most enchanting. The gigantic trees were covered with white snow. The little birds with feathers of exquisitely charming colors sitting on the trees plea ear with their sweet notes.
The butterflies with wings of the most beautiful hues could be seen flitting from flower to flower.
The many varieties of lovely flowers and beautiful ferns provided another source of delight to the eye.
The smell was so pleasing that I kept on breathing for quite some time. I wished that I had a hut there.
The houses were built in an irregular way and very often the top of one was in level with the door of another. This was very interesting We walked and walked.
At last, we came to Kashmir Point, a beautiful spot of nature with a very lovely view. All nature seemed to be awakened, as it were, by a magician's touch.
It was a new experience for me so I watched everything with rapt attention.
While we were on the way back, dark clouds gathered in the sky.
It began to rain heavily. We hurried back to the dak bungalow completely drenched. We were shivering all over. We felt great relief after having hot tea.
There was a heavy downpour throughout the night. When it was dawn, the rain stopped.
The sun rose in its full glory, investing the trees, flowers, hills, birds, and beasts with a golden light.
After our breakfast, we went out to see the Samli Sanitorium down in the valley. Samli is a beautiful little spot situated in a fine valley.
The entire area is covered with thick pine trees. We saw there a little stream of pure crystal water rippling from rock to rock and producing gentle music which seemed to creep into my soul.
A visit to the hills fills one with the inspiration and glory of God. An unknown joy slips into our souls and we return home filled with, the wonder and ecstasy of Nature.

The summer season in Multan is very hot. June and July are the hottest months. Heatwaves shock people and even take some lives. People should stay indoors, lest they get heatstroke. Schools and colleges have been closed and students have been given summer vacation. This enables them to travel outside Multan. When the heat becomes unbearable in Multan, people think of spending a few days at a hill station. There is no dearth of hill stations in Pakistan. The most popular hill stations are Muri, Swat, Naran etc in Kaghan Valley. Last year, we planned a trip to Naran in Kaghan Valley during our summer vacation. Since there is an unprecedented rush of people visiting the hill station, we booked our seats in advance by Khyber Mail in the second class two-tier sleeper compartment. We boarded the train in Multan and reached Rawalpindi the next morning. The actual journey was quite comfortable. We slept well. From Rawalpindi, we boarded a bus to Balakot. The journey from Rawalpindi to Balakot is very pleasant as beautiful views can be seen on both sides of the road. We passed through Jungle Mangal and Jabba, more than 20 km from Mansehra. There was a dense forest around Jabba. We were mesmerized by its natural beauty. In fact, the beauty of the landscape was simply breathtaking. However, traveling by bus was tiring as Batrasi Road had very sharp turns. The surrounding hills looked beautiful, with clouds on top. Shoham had a rope bridge over Kunhar. It was a beautiful sight. We took many pictures of the scene. In Balakot, there was a noise of a strong flow of river water. It was really a strange experience to hear that noise. You could find that noise no matter where you were. The noise was everywhere. Whether you were in a mosque, in a shop, or on the street, there was noise everywhere. I was still conscious of that particular noise when I was trying to sleep in the hotel. The next day we went to the outskirts of Balakot and there we saw the tomb of Shah Ismail Shaheed. The next day we left for Kagan. The condition of the road leading to Kaghan was bad. It was high in the upper half of a high mountain slope and the Kunhar river looked like a ribbon at the very bottom. The driver must be an expert as he has to negotiate sharp turns from time to time. There are bumps and jerks all the way. Naran is 7,890 feet above sea level. Wood was floating in the river. The water of the lake was fresh, cool, and clear.
We were told that the water of this lake if taken regularly can help in improving our health. We not only tasted the water but also brought some in our flasks. The lake is 10,537 feet above sea level and more than 12 kilometers from Naran. After spending a month in the Kaghan Valley, we returned to Multan. Although the tour was only for a month, it greatly improved my health. I will never forget this tour of the beautiful Kagan valley.
