Today we are going to remembering the person who changed the way we view drug addiction. the man he relied on research back methods such as medication and therapeutic communities for treating addiction, on the 23rd anniversary of his election to the national academy of medicine .the pioneering addiction psychologist Dr herbert David Kleber.




who passed away just last year on June 19th,1934  at the age of 84, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 19 June 1934. he was an American psychiatrist and substance abuse. today on 1 October 2019 google celebrated DR. herbert Kleber with google doodle for his incredible work as a pioneering addiction psychologist.

let's talk about Dr. herbert Klebe life

ON prompting of his father who had one time aspired to be a doctor himself. he attended Dartmouth College, where he studied pre-med and discovered his passion for psychology. he founded and headed the drug dependence unit at YALE UNIVERSITY, 

where he was a professor of psychiatry. then he served for 2 and a half year as the deputy director for Demand reduction at the office of national drug control policy in the white house .in the role, DR. Kleber implemented policies that led to a 'decreased demand for an illegal drug through programs in prevention, education, and treatment, " according to the Columbia University.

He viewed addiction as a medical condition unlike many doctors of his time, Dr. Kleber viewed addiction not as a moral failure, but as a condition that could only be treated through research, medication, and therapy. In 1996, Dr, Kleber was elected to be a member of the prestigious institute of medicine of the National Academy of Science. 

HE was listed as one of the best doctors in America and the best doctors in new york and was elected in 1996 to be a member of the institute of medicine of the National Academy of science. He was on the board of a number of organizations, including the partnership for a drug-free America, the treatment Research institute at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Betty Ford Institute.

Dr. Herber Kleber's first marriage was to his high school sweetheart, Joan fox, and the two had three children. the marriage ended in divorce. Dr. Herber Klebe's second wife who died in 2001 was Marian Fischman, a prominent addiction research scientist. 

together they co-founded the substance Abuse Division, one of the leading centers in the country, within the department of psychiatry at Columbia University. IT becomes one of the largest and most successful research programs of its kind in the country.

His success

In 1996, Dr. Kleber was elected to be a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science. prior to his passing at the age of 84 Dr. Kleber authored more than 250 papers and multiple books on the treatment of addiction. HE considered himself a "perpetual optimist" having dedicated more than four decades to the field of addiction treatment.

DR. Herber Klebe died on October 5th, 2018 at the age of 84 while vacationing in Greece with his wife, Anne Burlock Lawver, his son, marc, and his daughter-in-law, Judith. marc, and his daughter-in-law, Judith. marc Kleber confirmed the death and said his father, who lives in Manhattan, died of a heart attack on the island of Santorini per the NEW YORK POST.
